Rarely. Portable rental units can’t match the heat and suction of a truck-mounted system, so they tend to leave old carpet wet and full of soap residue that re-soils quickly. On decades-old carpet, that can make matting and odors worse. A professional rinse and extraction is gentler and more thorough.
