Why Rugs Over Hard Floors Need More Than a Surface Clean

A lot of Smyrna homes have hardwood, tile or luxury vinyl plank in the main living areas, with area rugs doing the job carpet used to do. That changes how a rug should be cleaned. Spraying and extracting a rug where it lies pushes moisture through it onto the floor underneath, where it dries slowly against the rug pad. Slow drying is when dyes move and brown stains wick up, and trapped moisture isn’t good for wood or the seams in a plank floor either.

At the rug spa, the rug is dusted to remove the grit packed in the base, washed where the rug allows it, rinsed until the residue is out, and dried evenly under controlled conditions. Your floor never gets wet.

Viscose, Wool and Hand-Tufted Rugs

Many of the rugs we pick up in Smyrna were bought for newer homes in the last several years, and a good number of them are viscose, sometimes sold as “art silk” or “bamboo silk.” Viscose looks soft and shiny but is weak when wet, can brown or yellow if cleaned the wrong way, and crushes easily. Hand-tufted wool rugs have a latex layer under a cloth backing that can break down with pet urine or repeated wetting. Hand-knotted and Oriental rugs need a dye test before washing.

Our technicians are Certified in Wool & Rayon/Viscose Textile Care, which is training for exactly these decisions: fiber, dye stability, moisture sensitivity and drying. Cleaning solutions are selected for the material and used according to manufacturer directions. If testing shows a rug shouldn’t be fully washed, we’ll recommend dusting and spot care and explain why.

Rug Cleaning Prices in Smyrna

In-plant rug cleaning is $4 per square foot in our price book, with a $175 appointment minimum per visit. A 6 x 9 rug (54 sq ft) comes to $216; a 10 x 14 dining room rug (140 sq ft) comes to $560. A single runner or small rug will fall under the minimum, so many customers send two or three rugs at once or add carpet cleaning to the visit. Fiber, construction, condition and urine treatment can change the price, and we confirm it after inspection, before cleaning starts. See our Silk & Shine Rug Spa page for the full process.

The Process, Start to Finish

Area Rug Cleaning in Smyrna: FAQs

Common questions from Smyrna customers. Call or text (615) 482-5590 if yours isn’t here.

Some rugs can be cleaned on site, but it’s more limited, especially over hardwood or LVP. For wool, viscose, handmade or urine-affected rugs, we recommend the rug spa.

Sometimes browning can be improved, and sometimes it can’t. We’ll look at it, test it and tell you what’s realistic before cleaning.

Tell us about it. Pads that have absorbed pet urine are often better replaced than cleaned.

At $4 per sq ft, a 5 x 8 rug is $160, so the $175 appointment minimum applies if it’s the only item in the visit.

Yes. Wall-to-wall carpet is cleaned in place with truck-mounted equipment in the same visit as rug pickup.
