Treating the Source, Not Just the Smell
Accidents happen, even with the best-trained dog or cat. When urine soaks past the surface of carpet, rugs or upholstery, the smell lingers well after the stain is gone, and store-bought sprays usually just cover it up for a few days. Our pet urine treatment in Nashville is built around treating the source, not just the smell: we find where the urine went, check how deep it reached, treat it with enzyme or specialty chemistry and extract it from below the surface. We can’t promise complete odor removal before we inspect, but we will tell you what to expect before we start.
Finding the Source: Pet Urine Detection
Urine rarely stays where you see it. On carpet, it runs through the fibers into the backing and spreads out in the pad, so the affected area underneath is often much larger than the spot on top. On upholstery, it soaks into the cushion, and on rugs it settles into the foundation.
That’s why treatment starts with finding every affected area. We inspect the carpet, rugs and furniture by sight and smell, and use a UV (blacklight) light where appropriate to reveal old, dried urine that isn’t visible in normal light. A moisture meter only helps on fresh or still-damp spots, so old dry urine is located by inspection and blacklight, not by meter. Ask about the corners and rooms your pets favor; old accidents often hide behind furniture and along walls. Once the areas are mapped, we can tell you what treatment will do, and whether any section has gone too far for cleaning alone.
Signs of hidden urine: a smell that gets stronger on humid days or after vacuuming, yellow or dark rings that come back after spot cleaning, and pets returning to the same spot. Pets are drawn back to areas that still smell like urine, so treating the source can also help discourage repeat accidents.
How We Determine the Right Treatment
Every pet job starts with a free blacklight inspection. What we find decides the treatment and the price, and you hear both before we start. No one can honestly promise 100% odor removal before inspecting.
Inspection
We walk the affected rooms, rugs and furniture with you and note stains, odor and the spots your pets favor.
UV / blacklight investigation
Where appropriate, a UV (blacklight) light shows old, dried urine you can’t see in normal light.
Contamination depth
We check whether the urine stayed in the fibers or reached the backing, pad or subfloor.
Enzyme or specialty chemistry
An enzyme or specialty treatment goes as deep as the urine went and is given time to work.
Subsurface extraction
Affected areas are flushed and extracted from below the surface, not just rinsed on top.
Pad and subfloor evaluation
When required, we explain options such as replacing a saturated section of pad before doing more.
Rug flushing
Where appropriate, area rugs go to Silk & Shine Rug Spa to be flushed and washed at our facility.
Enzyme Treatment That Works on the Source
Pet urine odor comes from residue that stays behind after the liquid dries. Perfumed deodorizers only mask it, and the smell often returns on humid days or after a shampoo adds moisture back.
We apply an enzyme treatment directly to each affected area, using enough product to reach as deep as the urine went. The enzymes digest the organic residue behind the smell. They need time to work, so we let the treatment sit before cleaning instead of rinsing it straight out.
After the dwell time, the area is deep cleaned. On carpet that means subsurface extraction where the urine reached the backing and pad, plus truck-mounted hot water extraction, which flushes the broken-down residue out and pulls the water back out with strong suction. Heavily affected spots may need a second application. The goal is honest: greatly reduce the odor and remove most of it, and tell you up front if something can’t be fixed by cleaning.
Before we arrive. Blot fresh accidents with plain white towels and cool water. Skip heat, steam and ammonia-based cleaners on fresh urine: heat can set the stain and odor, and ammonia smells like urine to pets.
Pet Urine in Carpet, Rugs and Upholstery
- Carpet: the most common problem. Enzyme treatment plus hot water extraction handles most accidents. Old, repeated accidents can leave lasting yellow or faded spots even after the odor is gone.
- Area and Oriental rugs: rugs with urine are best washed whole, so the foundation gets rinsed, not just the surface. Fine, wool and hand-knotted rugs go to Silk & Shine Rug Spa, our in-plant facility. Some dyes react to urine and can change color for good.
- Upholstery: sofas, recliners and mattresses get a fabric test first, then an enzyme treatment and a cleaning method matched to the fabric, with low-moisture cleaning for delicate fabrics. Learn more about our upholstery cleaning.
Hardwood floors with pet stains can be deep cleaned with our hardwood floor cleaning, but urine that has gone into the wood itself can’t be cleaned out.
When the Pad or Subfloor Is Affected
Carpet pad is made to absorb, which also means it holds urine. When an area has been used again and again, the pad can be saturated, and no surface treatment will fully reach it. In that case, replacing the affected section of pad usually does more than repeated cleaning. Our carpet installation and repair team can lift the carpet, replace that piece of pad and re-stretch the carpet.
Sometimes the urine has gone all the way into the subfloor. A stained or soaked subfloor will keep smelling even under new pad, so it has to be cleaned and sealed before the pad goes back down. We’ll show you what we find and explain your options before any work beyond cleaning begins.
Our Pet Odor Treatment Process
- Inspection. We locate the affected areas on carpet, rugs and furniture, using a UV (blacklight) light where appropriate to find old, dried urine.
- Honest assessment. You’ll hear what cleaning can do, what may need pad replacement, and the price, before we start.
- Dry soil and hair removal. Loose soil and pet hair are vacuumed out first.
- Enzyme or specialty treatment. Each affected area is treated deep enough to reach the urine, then left to work.
- Subsurface extraction and cleaning. Subsurface extraction and hot water extraction for carpet, a fabric-tested method for upholstery, and flushing at Silk & Shine Rug Spa for rugs where appropriate.
- Recheck. Stubborn spots get a second treatment, and you see the results before we leave.
- Drying. Air movers speed up drying so pets and people can get back on the floor sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not always completely. In the majority of homes, enzyme treatment and deep cleaning greatly reduce the odor and remove most of it. When the pad is saturated or the subfloor is affected, cleaning alone may not be enough, and we’ll tell you before we start.
The enzymes break down the organic residue in pet urine that causes the odor. We give the treatment time to work, then deep clean the area to flush the residue out.
Urine that reached the backing or pad wicks back up when the carpet gets damp again. Surface cleaning doesn’t reach it, so the odor returns, especially on humid days.
Not always. Most accidents respond to enzyme treatment and deep cleaning. When one area has been soaked repeatedly, replacing that section of pad often works better than cleaning it again.
Yes. We test the fabric, apply an enzyme treatment and clean with a method matched to the fabric, using low-moisture cleaning on delicate materials.
Often, yes. Rugs with urine are best washed whole at Silk & Shine Rug Spa, our in-plant facility. Some dyes change color for good, and we’ll tell you if we see that risk.
Some will. Old urine can leave lasting discoloration in carpet fibers and rug dyes even after the odor is gone. We’ll point out spots that may not fully come out before we begin.
