Upstairs Bedrooms, New Carpet and the Puppy Year
A pattern we see often in Smyrna: a family moves into a newer two-story home with carpet upstairs, gets a puppy or adopts a dog, and a year later one bedroom corner or the landing at the top of the stairs has a smell that won’t go away. New carpet and pad are very absorbent. Urine that seems small on the surface spreads into the pad underneath, sometimes to an area several times larger than the visible spot.
Cats are a different problem. They tend to choose the same hidden spot, behind a door, under a bed or along a wall, so the damage is often found late, after the urine has dried and soaked deep. That’s where a UV light helps, because old urine that’s invisible in normal light shows up under it.
What the Treatment Involves
- Inspection and mapping. We check the rooms, rugs and furniture by sight and smell, and with a blacklight where appropriate.
- Depth. We determine whether urine stayed in the fibers or reached the backing, pad or subfloor.
- Enzyme or specialty chemistry, applied as deep as the urine went and given time to dwell, not rinsed straight out.
- Subsurface extraction of the affected areas, then truck-mounted hot water extraction of the carpet.
- Pad and subfloor options. When an area has been used repeatedly, replacing a section of pad usually does more than cleaning it again. Our carpet installation and repair team can lift the carpet, replace that piece and re-stretch it.
Heavily affected spots may need a second application. The goal is to greatly reduce the odor and remove most of it, and to tell you up front if something can’t be fixed by cleaning.

Pricing
Pet treatment is quoted after the free inspection, because the number of spots and how deep they go varies from home to home. Routine carpet cleaning is $75 per room and $75 per set of stairs (up to 17 steps) in our price book, with a $175 appointment minimum per visit. Couches are $175 and 5 to 6 seat sectionals $300 if the cushions need cleaning too.
Rugs, Couches and Stairs
Area rugs with urine are best washed whole at Silk & Shine Rug Spa so the foundation is flushed, not just the surface; see area rug cleaning in Smyrna. Upholstery gets a fabric test, enzyme treatment and a method matched to the fabric; see upholstery cleaning in Smyrna. Stairs and landings are treated step by step. For general carpet cleaning, visit carpet cleaning in Smyrna, and for the full method, our pet treatment and odor control page.
Before we arrive: blot fresh accidents with white towels and cool water, and avoid steam, heat and ammonia-based cleaners on fresh urine.

Moisture in the air reactivates dried urine residue in the pad and backing. That’s a sign the source is below the surface and needs subsurface treatment.
Yes. Stairs are treated and cleaned step by step, including the edges where urine often runs down.
Usually not. More often, a saturated section of pad is the problem, and replacing that piece costs far less than new carpet. We’ll tell you after the inspection.
Once the carpet is dry, usually in about 4 to 8 hours, pets can return. Cleaning solutions are selected for the material and used according to manufacturer directions.
Yes. We treat rentals between tenants and can combine pet treatment, carpet cleaning and pad repair in one plan.
